Sisu Diesel’s Environmental Management System certified
30.01.2002The environmental management system of Sisu Diesel Inc., situated in Nokia Finland has been approved by Det Norske Veritas. The certificate was received by Managing Director Eero Tomi in January 2002.
Sisu Diesel Oy belonging to the Partek Group develops and manufactures Sisudiesel engines, aggregates and gear components. In 2001, the engine production exceeded 24 000 units. The aggregate and gear production also achieved new production records.
Sisu Diesel started to build its environmental management system in accordance with the international ISO14001 standard in 1998. The focus of the system is to recognize the significant environmental aspects of the company and manage them by measuring and improving them continually.
An environmental policy gives guidelines for the environmental management of a company. In the environmental policy of Sisu Diesel Inc., the company commits itself to lower emissions and prevention of environmental pollution. On the basis of the environmental policy and the significant environmental aspects, Sisu Diesel has established an environmental programme, which aim is to positively impact on the significant environmental aspects.
The most significant environmental effect is exhaust gas emissions during the life cycle of the engines manufactured by Sisu Diesel. The product development of engines is therefore focused on stable reduction of emissions and improvement of the fuel economy of the engines. This development has a positive influence on the environment through reduced carbon dioxide emissions and through lower running costs on users.
The environmental management system implemented at the end of 2000 has shown its efficiency. One of the environmental goals of Sisu Diesel’s environmental programme is to reduce production of composite waste, i.e. waste to be brought to landfills. In 2001, the total amount of waste was remarkably lower than in the previous year despite increased production rates at the same time. The amount of waste delivered to landfills was reduced from 465 tons to 381 tons.
The environment aspects have been taken better into consideration also when purchasing new machines. As an example, the dry cut hobbing machine purchased for the gear department has diverse advantages: e.g. dry (oil free) cutting saves nature resources and it also makes it easier to keep the floor of the operation site clean.
The certificate approved for the environmental management system is an indication of implementation of the environmental system in accordance with the standard. Sisu Diesel Oy will also in future further develop its products and activities to be more environmental sound.
